More than 50 high school students spent a day learning about career options in the insurance industry from the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of New York. Students from Dryden, Groton, and McGraw High Schools and Charles O. Dickerson High School in Trumansburg toured the trade group’s offices near Syracuse on December 7.
The students are participants in InVEST, the insurance industry’s premier classroom-to-career education program. Bob Baxter, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of Dryden Mutual Insurance Co. accompanied the students and their teachers. Dryden Mutual is a long-time supporter of InVEST and annually sponsors the students’ visit to IIABNY’s offices.
In addition to touring the office, students met with IIABNY staff and learned about the work New York’s oldest insurance producer trade association is doing in the areas of social media, blogging and video podcasting. Staff also described the wide variety of careers available in the industry.
Students also listened to presentations on the claims and underwriting functions from staff at Kemper Corporation. The Kemper employees described the various paths they took to their current positions and the nature of their jobs.
