Although there is no magic formula to win a scholarship award, we have useful advice that will help you to be a great scholarship candidate. Always remember the five P’s – Prior Preparation Prevents Poor Performance.
- Submissions are due by the deadline. Send your entry materials on time.
- Stick to the scholarship description guidelines by submitting all of the requested information, no less!
- Cover all requested topics in your essay. See scholarship descriptions.
- If you hand-write your application, do so neatly and legibly. Proofread the entire application carefully.
- Proofread your essay for grammar, spelling and punctuation blunders.
- Have a parent or teacher review your work. It is easy to overlook minor errors. An outside opinion can help you perfect your submission.
- Be sure to get original recommendation letters from teachers, mentors, employers, etc. Letters of recommendation show that people in your life respect your skills and accomplishments and are willing to say so in writing and sign their names. We recommend at least one is from the InVEST teacher or volunteer and mentions your leadership skills.
- Do not send in wrinkled, dirty or stained paperwork.
- You are responsible for making sure your application and supplemental items arrive on time. Make sure you inform those who are contributing to your application so they have sufficient lead-time.
- Take the steps to make sure your application gets where it needs to go. Make copies of your entire submission and save. Should your submission go astray, you will be able to reproduce it quickly.
- If you are not majoring in insurance, be sure to include what direction you plan to go in the insurance industry (ie. marketing for an insurance company).
- If you have a moving story to share about your experiences with InVEST, please include it! Anything to make yours stick out from the rest! Just be sure to still follow the guidelines.
***Although we are not able to award a scholarship to each applicant, we wish all students the best as they endeavor to continue their educations. |
